Training

Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club is recognised by the RYA as a training establishment, authorised to carry out many of the shorebased courses associated with the RYA Training Scheme.

Course dates are available here, or email shyctraining@rya-online.net for further details.

The following courses are offered:

Plus a range of practical one-day courses:

Besides these formal courses, arrangements can be made through the club to meet specific practical training needs, including coaching for the Yachtmaster practical exam and ladies-only sailing days.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

A growing number of countries require an ICC to be held by skippers, sailing in their territorial and inland waters. The Club is authorised to carry out the necessary test procedure for those who need it, and can arrange a short session of pre-test tuition if required.

Sea safety

The Club is keen to promote high standards of safety at sea. This aim is pursued, both by raising personal skill levels under the RYA Training Scheme, and also by co-operation with the Sovereign Harbour Berth-Holders Association and the Eastbourne RNLI Water Safety Team, staging safety events in the Harbour to focus on particular issues, such as flares, lifejackets, and life-rafts.

Seacheck

Sea safety advice can be delivered at individual level, as appropriate to particular owners' boats by requesting an RNLI Seacheck (www.rnlisafety.org). This is an opportunity for owners to discuss and assess their own levels of safety equipment, and how to make best use of it, with an RNLI authorised safety adviser.

Whilst Safety and Training services are delivered primarily for the benefit of the membership, our courses and safety advice are available to all. Enquiries should be directed through the Principal of Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club Training, Mark Robinson.
