Cruising Preparations
A brief checklist of legal requirements, mostly intended to assist newcomers.
Qualifications
International Certificate of Competence
A simple test of basic boat handling and understanding of the marine environment. Easily within the grasp of the basic yachtsman.
Short Range Radio Certificate
The basic legal requirement
If anyone needs to gain either of these, let me know I will get you on a course. Neither of these are difficult.
CEVNI Certificate
Only needed if you intend to go into inland waterways. It comprises understanding the traffic signs and 'highway code' for inland waterways. Very simple, technically speaking, a requirement if you lock in from the main sea.
This might be worth a course if you have not got it. Let me know if you are interested.
Paperwork
SSR or part 1 registration certificate
Big expensive boats have part 1. Most boats have Small Ships Register, which is a simple form to fill. Can be done on line and delivered within a few days.
Certificate of VAT paid
Copy invoice or something to prove the boat's VAT status. Never a problem if you bought the boat from a reputable dealer but worth carrying.
Boat Insurance
Current insurance certificate in case you need to prove it.
Passports
One for everyone on board if you are leaving Britain.
All the foregoing is for peace of mind. Although these are a legal requirement, it is quite rare to be required to produce them but sometimes harbour officials want to see them and fines are issued if they are not to hand.
